The parent Detroit Red Wings made another round of cuts today, trimming their roster by seventeen players, many of whom are expected to play in Grand Rapids this season. Backup netminder Adam Berkhoel, Defensemen Brad Ference, Garrett Stafford, and Jakub Kindl, were assigned to Grand Rapids along with forwards Carl Corazzini, Mark Cullen, Brett Engelhardt, Randall Gelech, and Ryan Oulahen. In addition, four players under contract to Grand Rapids were released from camp, D Jon Insana, D Cleve Kinley, RW Adam Keefe, and RW Jamie Tardif, and will be reporting to the Griffins. Three other try-outs released from camp, RW Neil Clark, D Scott Jackson, and G Dominic Vicari may resurface in Grand Rapids for a shot at an AHL contract.

This leaves several players with ties to the Griffins battling it out in Detroit for a spot on the NHL roster. Up front Matt Ellis, Igor Grigorenko, Mattias Ritola, Mark Hartigan, and Johan Ryno are battling with try-out Aaron Downey for the 13th spot, with the losers being assigned to the AHL. On the blueline Kyle Quincey, Derek Meech, and Jonathan Ericsson are in a dogfight with NHL vet Brent Sopel for the 7th spot with meech currently holding the inside edge because of his waiver status. Other Griffins players still in Detroit include C Evan McGrath, C Darren Helm (Injured), and Netminder Jimmy Howard.
