#30 Thomas McCollum
Pos: Goaltender
D.O.B.: 12/7/89
From: Amherst, New York
Height: 6'2
Weight: 208
Catches: Left
Drafted: 2008 draft 1st rnd, 30th by Detroit (NHL)
Acquired: Signed 3-yr contract with Detroit (NHL) 10/3/08
Personal:
Plus: Excellent positioning... great butterfly... handles puck well... good size... Very competitive...
Minus: Inconsistent... World Junior Fiasco casts doubt on "big game" player status... Mental Toughness in question...
Organizational Comments: "You can see things have slowed down for him. He stays square and uses his size to his advantage. He lets the puck come to him. He has the size, and even when he's on his knees, he still covers a lot of the net. I like his athleticism for his size, patience, and composure." Wings Goaltending Coach Jim Bedard
What GRC says: 2012-13: McCollum kept up the pace from the first half and turned in a pro best 18 wins for the season with some respectable numbers for goals against and save percentage. As expected, he didn't see a minute of ice time in the postseason and his future is very much in doubt. The Griffins have re-signed him and are giving him one more chance to establish himself, though he may have to bide his time in Toledo at the start of the season.
2011-12: McCollum had an up and down second half, and clearly much more was expected from the former first round pick. He had a career high winning streak after being recalled from the ECHL, but faded down the stretch and posted some ugly numbers. McCollum has another year left on his entry-level contract and it will be a make-or-break season for the personable young netminder. 2010-11: McCollum continued his freefall, losing his confidence and his job in short order. He spent the majority of the second half riding the pine or in the ECHL with Toledo. He was pressed into service with the parent Wings, but ended up getting blitzed and only lasted a few minutes. With a lot of questions hanging over his head, next season could be a make or break one for the young netminder.
2009-10: Rookie netminder lost his confidence around Christmas and had a brutal two and a half month losing streak sandwiched around a demotion to the ECHL. He showed signs of recovering at the end of the season, and should rebound next season with a year of experience under his belt. Fall 2009: McCollum turns pro with nothing left to prove in Jr hockey. Now he must show that he can excel as a pro and that he can be a "money" goaltender. He was very impressive in Traverse City, and should push Larsson for starts in the AHL. McCollum is the real deal and just needs the experience to go with the skill.
Role: Starting Netminder
Projection: NHL Starter
