#31 Joey MacDonald
Pos: Goaltender
D.O.B.: 2/7/80
From: Pictou, Nova Scotia
Height: 6' 0"
Weight: 190
Catches: Left
Drafted: Not drafted
Acquired: Signed with Detroit 12/21/01
Personal:
Plus: Good positional play... Patient and doesn't get rattled in traffic... Excellent Focus and Mental makeup... Consistency...
Minus: Bad back has limited his playing time... Rebound control needs work...
Organizational Comments: "He's big and strong and focused and, most of all, nothing seems to rattle him. Everybody would like a goaltender who has a competitive fire that burns beneath a cool and calm demeanor. That's Joey. He's on such an even keel."Griffins Head Coach Greg Ireland
What GRC says: 2010-11: For the most part MacDonald was one of the only consistent parts of this team the first half of the season, keeping them in games they had no business getting points out of. The former AHL all-star was at the top of his game most of the season, though most of the second half was spent in the NHL.
Fall 2010: Joey Mac returns to the organization after a three and a half year trip around the NHL. He is looking to repeat some of his earlier success in Grand Rapids and rebuild his name to get another shot at the bigs. Now a 30 yr old veteran, if he can avoid the injury bug, he should be just what the doctor ordered for this young Griffins squad while providing a capable number three for Detroit.
2005-06: Back trouble for the second season in a row pushed MacDonald to the sidelines and may have cost him an opportunity to play in the NHL. He needs to come back strong and have a great camp to avoid being thrown on the scrapheap with MacIntyre, Howard and Liv pushing for the prime time. 2004-05: In his first season as a starter, MacDonald re-wrote the Griffins' record book and kept the team alive through some incredible droughts. Only a back injury at the end of the season could derail his cinderella run to the playoffs. 2003-04: With Marc Lamothe in Detroit, MacDonald took advantage of his chance to shine with the Griffins. He posted sparkling numbers and proved capable of handling No. 1 duties. 2002-03: Joey had an outstanding rookie campaign in the AHL, winning 14 games in 20 decisions, and ringing up 3 shutouts. MacDonald was almost unbeatable at times, and even outplayed all-star Lamothe early in the season. Joey must take the next step and show that he can be a starter at this level.
Role: Backup Goaltender
