#8 Cory Emmerton
Pos: Center/Left Wing
D.O.B.: 06/01/88
From: St Thomas, Ontario
Height: 6'
Weight: 190
Shoots: Left
Drafted: 2nd Rnd 2006 draft by Detroit (NHL)
Acquired: Signed to ATO by Grand Rapids 3/29/08
Personal:
Plus: Top Shelf vision and playmaking skills... Nose for the net... Pure offensive talent makes linemates better... Great hands... Shifty skater with slick moves... Quick feet - good acceleration... Skating, once below par, has improved to be a strength...
Minus: Needs to bulk up and get stronger... Defensive game could use some work... Intensity level needs to improve...
Organizational Comments: "He's a point-producer, sees the ice well, moves the puck well, good around the net. He just needs to add strength and keep improving his skating." Red Wings Asst. GM Jim Nill
What GRC says: 2009-10: Emmerton's development seems to be in a holding pattern, as he didn't really take a step forward this season. He is defensively sound and shows glimpses of top shelf offensive talent, but is running out of time to find the consistency and intensity he needs to move up. 2008-09: Emmerton had an up and down season, bouncing around the lineup in the second half, mired in some epic droughts. It is obvious that the skill is there, but he was not strong enough to make things happen on a regular basis in the AHL, and he didn't always play with fire and compete as hard as he needed to. To succeed in the AHL Emmerton must refine his game as a pro because too often when he wasn't scoring he was not contributing. If he can improve his strength this off-season as much as he improved his skating over the last, he should be back on track next year.
2007-08: Cory made some tremendous improvements in his skating since last season, and while no Helm, he didn't look out of place either. The slick playmaker could have easily had several more points if his wingers would have been able to capitalize on his setups. That being said, he still needs to work on his conditioning and strength, and will have to develop more consistency to claim a regular spot on the roster next season..
2006-07:Cory only saw action in two games, and looked to be a step slow in both his skating and his reaction time. Another year in juniors should help him develop his game for another crack at the AHL at the end of the season.
Spring 2007:Emmerton is a player that perfectly fits the Wings mold of smooth puck controlling forwards. He brings an impressive set of skills to the table and should have an immediate impact.
Role: Playmaking Forward
Projection: NHL Second Liner
