#7 Brendan Smith
Pos: Defense
D.O.B.: 2/8/89
From: Mimico, Ontario
Height: 6'2
Weight: 190
Shoots: Left
Drafted: 2007 draft, 1st rnd , 27th by Detroit Red Wings
Acquired: Signed by Detroit (NHL) 5/27/10
Personal:
Plus: A tremendous skater with effortless strides... Great on ice vision... Adept at moving the puck or leading the rush... Good, heavy point shot... Will play physical... Great puck handler... creative offensive player...
Minus: Needs to bulk up and add muscle to his frame... Dogged by off ice trouble during college career... Maturity is an issue...
Organizational Comments: "He's a very strong skater, sees the ice well, jumps into the play, He's physical, plays with an edge. He has a little bit of Niklas Kronwall in him.'' Wings Asst GM Jim Nill
What GRC says: 2011-12: The organization's top defensive prospect finished an up and down season, probably his last in the AHL. While he clearly has some next level talent when he chooses to use it, he did not play up to that level consistently. He did pick it up for a stretch in the second half after a recall to Detroit, but disappeared late in the season with a playoff spot on the line. Smith still managed to score 5 goals and 17 points in 25 games, upping his season total to 10 goals and 34 points in just 57 games. 2010-11: Injuries got the best of him as he was not the same player much of the second half at least the few games he got into. If he can stay healthy he has already showed off a set of NHL level skills on both sides of the puck. Smith, like most rookie defensemen, needs to add some muscle over the summer and work on being able to withstand the rigors of the professional schedule. He is well on his way to steady NHL employment, and another AHL all-star season is probably on tap.
Spring 2010: Smith continued his development in college with an all-everything season that saw him the leading defensive scorer in the nation and a Hobey Baker finalist. The smooth skating offensive blueliner has all the skill in the world and must mature and grow into conducting himself like a professional. He could easily have a monster season offensively, quarterbacking the Griffins powerplay.
Role: Offensive Defenseman
Projection: Top 2 NHL Defenseman
