Training Camp 1969

Defense Is Key In Training Camp
Sixty-four players are attending the Red Wings 1969 training camp.
According to General Manager Sid Abel, 21 amateurs and 43 professionals are working out in preparation for the 1969-70 hockey season. The total includes 36 forwards, 21 defenseman and seven goaltenders.
Coach Bill Gadsby, beginning his second season behind the Red Wings bench, said the emphasis in camp is on defense. But, he also has reunited Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, and Frank Mahovlich - the Power Line - as a unit. The trio set an NHL record last year for most goals scored by a line in one season with 114 tallies.
"If Garry Monahan can play left wing on our second line, we'll keep the big guys together and form a third line for mostly checking and defensive duty," Gadsby said.
Besides Mahovlich and Monahan, the other left wingers in camp include returnees Nick Libett and Hank Monteith. and Larry jeffrey, obtained by the wings from New York in the off-season.
Delvecchio, the Red Wings captain and an 18-year NHL veteran, leads a large contingent of centermen in training camp. Other returning pivots include 20-goal scorers Pete Stemkowski and Garry Unger, along with youngsters Rick McCann and Renald Leclerc, both of whom saw limited action with the Wings last season.
Howe, 41-year-old superstar beginning his 24th NHL season, leads the right wingers in camp. Wayne Connelly, Bruce MacGregor, and Ed Hatoum also have returned from last year's squad and the wings are taking a good look at Doug Volmar, a 24-year-old amateur who scored 63 goals in the International League last season.
On defense, the Wings have four veterans who have returned from last year and two notable additions. Bob Baun, Gary Bergman, Poul Popiel and Ron Harris are the returning defenseman, while Carl Brewer and off-season draft pick Matt Ravlich are making their first appearance in Detroit uniforms.
Roger Crozier and Roy Edwards, who shared the goaltending duties last year with Terry Sawchuk, are the leading candidates in goal for the Red Wings.
1969 Training Camp Notes
For the second consecutive year, the Red Wings have a rookie coach in camp as former Detroit defenseman Doug Barkley takes the reins of the Fort Worth farm team. Last year, Red Wings coach Bill Gadsby began his first season at the helm of the parent club. Competing in the tough Central Hockey League, Fort Worth is the top development team in the Detroit farm system.

On the basis of training camp and preseason performance, Abel and his staff will assign players to five different clubs for the coming season. The top players will be selected for the Red Wings major league roster, while many of the top young pros needing minor league experience will be assigned to Fort Worth. Other players signed to Detroit contracts will see action with the San Diego Gulls of the Western Hockey League, the Cleveland Barons of the American League and the Johnstown Jets of the Eastern League. The Red Wings have working agreements with all three minor league clubs.

The Wings training camp has an international flavor this year with the presence of native-born players from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Czechoslovakia, Lebanon, Canada, and the United States. Poul Popiel, born in Sollested, Denmark and Ed (Sock) Hatoum, born in Beirut, Lebanon begin their second season with the Red Wings. Three European players - Pete Hejma of Czechoslovakia, Veli-Pekka Ketola of Denmark and Lennart Svedberg of Sweden - are attending their first Detroit training camp.
The American players include John Cuniff of Boston, Mass., Bob Lindberg of Minneapolis, Minn., Jim Niekamp of Detroit and Doug Volmar of Cleveland, Ohio. Volmar, incidentally, is the highest goal scorer in the Red Wings camp off of last season's record. The big Right winger scored 63 goals last year for Columbus of the International League.

Athletes come in assorted sizes and one of the constant moans of any sports training staff is how to fit them all. The tallest player in camp this year is 6-3 Brian Gibbons, a 22-year-old defenseman from St. John's, Nfld. Five players - three of them goaltenders - qualify as the shortest at 5-8. They include goalies Roger Crozier, Roy Edwards and Jim Rutherford, and left wing Ron Garwasiuk and center Al Karlander. Heaviest player in camp is Volmar at 215 lbs. while Garwasiuk weighs in as the lightest at 155 lbs.
As for the youngest and oldest players in camp, 20-year-old Wayne Chernecki, born August 12, 1949, is the youngest while a familiar face beginning his 24th season is the oldest. Gordie Howe is 41. Howe had already played three NHL season and scored 35 goals before Chernecki was born.
