2006 Grand Rapids Griffins Training Camp
Day 3...
By Jason Kasiorek

Day 3 brought surprise with Darryl Bootland on the ice in Grand Rapids. It was announced later in the day that he had been sent down, and then later in the afternoon that he had indeed clear waivers like his longtime friend Matt Ellis had the day before. Bootland seemed to be in a very good mood, even jovial. I welcomed him back to GR and had a few words with him about the demotion, but he indicated he was OK, and not too upset.

Later on Bootland gathered up a bunch of pucks and teammate Derek Meech and went into the stands to sign autographs for a group of kids in attendance.

The team was split into two groups that each practiced for about an hour. Headlining the first group were Meech, Himelfarb, McGrath, Bootland, and Tardif. The second group featured Brooks, Radunske, Miller, and Keller.

The White team came from behind to win 8-7. Evan McGrath carried a hot hand and scored a hat trick. Bootland added a pair of tallies, and Jamie Tardif scored again. Brendan Brooks' line was active for the white team, figuring in on 4 of the white teams goals. Andrew Martin scored twice for team white, his second straight strong performance.

The Shootout:

Observations:

Brendan Brooks was very impressive with his speed and skill.

Rookie McGrath seems to get better every day, and had a great performance in the scrimmage, playing on a line with Bootland.

Brendan Walsh was very noticeable this afternoon, turning in a scrappy performance with his dogged checking.

Defenseman Iain McPhee had a tough scrimmage, and had trouble handling the puck in his own end.
