What GRC says: 2015-16 There are a lot of things to like about Ouellet's game, he is a good skater who can handle the puck well and plays with an edge. He makes a good first pass, and is confident enough to carry the puck up ice to create chances. Unfortunately that confidence is sometimes his undoing as he is guilty of trying to do too much and gets into trouble. It can be maddening watching him turn the puck over in his own end because he thinks he beat the last man to make a great play when the simple play would have been to rim it off the boards and down the ice. It is unlikely he will pass through waivers in the fall, but it remains to be seen whether he will be part of the Detroit blue line sextet.
2014-15 After spending significant time in the NHL early in the season, Ouellet lost his spot to Marchenko and spent most of the second half in the AHL. He had an up and down season battling some consistency issues, and was sometimes guilty of trying to do too much and got burned. The unflappable blueliner is very good defensively and capable of carrying the puck and making plays. He upped the physical side of his game in the postseason, and was tough to play against. Could be in the running for a spot in the NHL out of camp, but Detroit's depth may lead to his return for another season.
2013-14 Continued his strong rookie season in the second half, becoming much more assertive and confident. Very steady in his own end, he uses his mobility to get the puck out of trouble and transition to offense. Statistically he struggled along with the rest of the team during a late season lull, but was still a defensive presence. Ouellet got into an NHL playoff game with Detroit and came back an impact player for the Griffins the rest of the way. He has an outside shot of stealing an NHL job out of training camp, but still has waiver eligibility and should be a key for the Griffins
Fall 2013 Ouellet brings a lot of skill to the Griffins back end if he can win a regular spot on the blueline. He is a heads-up, puck moving defenseman and can quarterback a powerplay.
Role: Two-way Defenseman
Projection: NHL 4-5 Defenseman
