#39 Tyler Bertuzzi
Pos: LW
D.O.B.: 2/24/95
From: Sudbury, ONT
Height: 6'1
Weight: 190
Shoots: Left
Drafted: 2013 draft 2nd rnd, 58th overall by Detroit (NHL)
Acquired: Signed to 3-yr contract by Detroit (NHL) 10/17/14
Personal:
Plus: Plays with an edge... Good skater with shifty speed... Much better offensive skills than one would expect from a checker... Very good defensively due to his above average on ice vision... Accurate shot that he gets off quickly... A first level agitator that gets the other team off it's game...
Minus: Prone to bad penalties and must learn to keep his temper in check at times... Guilty of being out of position to make a hit at times... Still working on consistency and playing the same way during the regular season as he does in the playoffs...
Organizational Comments: Red Wings Special Assistant to GM - Kris Draper: "He's a guy that we love his tenacity, love his grit and the way he plays. He's a really greasy, slippery player below the tops of the circles. (Red Wings GM Ken Holland) just talked to all 40 prospects in here about competing and getting in the paint and the hard areas (to score goals). That's what Tyler Bertuzzi does.
What GRC says: 2014-15 Surprising rookie earned a spot on the top line and played with confidence and poise throughout the playoffs. Bertuzzi showed a surprising amount of skill for a player drafted as an agitator and physical presence. Turns pro next season and if his short postseason audition is any indication, he could be a difference maker. Good all-around player not afraid to bang and stick his nose into the high traffic areas.
2015-16 After a slow start to the season, Bertuzzi heated up down the stretch adding 9 goals and 16 points while playing his standard aggressive fore-checking game. For the second year in a row, he came alive in the postseason where his 7 goals in 9 games easily paced the team's top scorers. The feisty winger brings energy and agitates with his physical play, but is an effective offensive player as well, a rare combination of grit and talent. He needs to continue to work on his consistency and to keep his head and not take bad penalties, but should be on the cusp of his first taste of the NHL next season.
Role: Two Way forward
Projection: NHL 3rd Line wing
