#4 Marcus Crawford
Pos: D
D.O.B.: 3/21/97
From: Ajax, Ont
Height: 5'11
Weight: 190
Shoots: Right
Drafted: Undrafted
Acquired: Signed to 2-yr contract by Grand Rapids (AHL) 4/3/18
Personal:
Plus: Powerplay quarterback... Ability to join the attack... Offensive poise and vision...
Minus: Undersized, has a hard time defending against bigger forwards... Inconsistent...
Organizational Comments: Walleye Coach Dan Watson "Marcus has developed into a very solid, two-way D-man who plays in all situations. He has good vision and has good offensive instincts."
What GRC says: Fall 2026 Because the Griffins boast a heavily congested blueline filled with top-flight Detroit draft picks, locking down a permanent top-four AHL spot will be incredibly difficult for Crawford. Instead, head coach Dan Watson will lean on Crawford's 350 games of professional experience as "insurance depth". If injuries hit the main squad, expect Crawford to seamlessly step into the AHL lineup and provide an immediate offensive spark on the secondary man-advantage. Because Crawford is signed to an AHL contract rather than a rigid NHL contract, he is highly susceptible to being loaned down to Detroit's ECHL affiliate, the Toledo Walleye, to ensure he maintains heavy playing minutes. If he spends the majority of his season in Toledo-where he previously played from 2018-20-he projects as a point-per-game elite defenseman. Flanking Brandon Hawkins on a devastating Walleye power play, Crawford will be expected to replicate his 72-assist form and drive Toledo deep into the postseason.
2018-19 Spent most of the season the ECHL with Toledo posting 26 points in 48 games in his freshman season as a pro. Crawford provides depth in the system, but is likely to remain in Toledo nad will have a hard time finding playing time in the AHL.
Summer 2018 An ace powerplay quarterback in the OHL, Crawford showed the ability to create offense from the point, notching nearly a point per game last season. With the logjam in front of him, he is likely projected to start the season with the Walleye, and it remains to be seen how much opportunity he will have with the Griffins.
Role: Powerplay Quarterback
Projection: Minor league defender
