#54 Givani Smith
Pos: RW
D.O.B.: 2/27/98
From: Toronto, Ont
Height: 6'2
Weight: 209
Shoots: Left
Drafted: 2016 draft 2nd rnd, 846th overall by Detroit (NHL)
Acquired: Signed 3-yr contract with Detroit 10/17/16
Personal:
Plus: Extremely strong and likes to hit and play a physical game... Devastating hitter and deadly on the forecheck... Soft hands and can make skilled plays with the puck... Powerful skater will go around or through defenders to get to the net... Battles effectively along the boards and in the corners... Adept at working the cycle down low...
Minus: Acceleration could use some work... Guilty of looking for the hit and taking himself out of the play... Consistency...
Organizational Comments: Red Wings GM - Ken Holland "I think he goes to the paint, if you want to score goals in the world today, with the size of the goalies and with the way they play defense, you got to go to the paint. You got to go to the paint, and he goes to the paint. He's not going to be deterred."
What GRC says: 2018-19 After a lackluster first half, Smith raised the level of his game over the second half and was a force during the post-season. The numbers won't show the impact he had on the game, but he showed signs of putting it all together as the season went along. He is a physical specimen with size and soft hands, able to impart his will and skill on the play when he chooses to. He can steal the puck and cut towards the net, and very few players can stop him on the way there. If he continues to play at this level, the points will come. The biggest thing the physical forward needs to continue working on is keeping his temper in check and not taking bad penalties. He should play a bigger role with the Griffins next season.
Summer 2018 Smith looks like he could develop into a rare combination of skills and strength as he has shown off the skills necessary to be a top power forward in the OHL. Physically mature, he will need to work on maintaining his focus and continuing to develop his skill game. Whether he becomes a top six scorer or bottom six banger is entirely up to him. In either case he should definitely brng some grit, sandpaper, and scoring potential to the Griffins lineup.

Role: Power Forward
Projection: NHL 2nd or 3rd line winger
