The wings prospects fell just short, losing in the championship game of the Prospect Tournament to lose out on the Matthew Wuest Memorial Cup. Training Camp represented a changing of the guard this season, as Captain Henrik Zetterberg announced his retirement prior to camp due to a debilitating back injury. This paved the way for some of the organization's young guns to jockey for roles with the parent club. Besides Dylan Larkin and Anthony Mantha, Filip Zadina, Michael Rasmussen,Joe Veleno and Evgeny Svechnikov were the talk of the town, serving notice they were ready for a shot. On the backend, Filip Hronek, Libor Sulak, Dennis Cholowski and Joe Hicketts turned in intriguing performances in vying for open spots on the Wings' blueline.
Jussi Jokinen was the lone NHL pro in camp on a tryout contract, but players on AHL contracts with the Griffins hoped to draw some interest from the big club as well. Chris Terry, Carter Camper, Wade Megan Jake Chelios and Matt Puempel, the new Griffins leadership group were in camp for the first time trying to establish the pecking order for mid-season call-ups. On the injury front, Johan Franzen did not attend camp, and veteran defender Mike Green, recovering from off-season surgery contracted a virus that kept him off the ice. Brian Lashoff did not take part in camp due to an ACL injury suffered during the off-season, while winger Martin Frk was injured early and missed time. The Wings invited 72 players to camp, 7 netminders, 23 defenders and 42 forwards.They range in height from 6'6 (Rasmussen) to 5'8 (Joe Hicketts), and in weight from 236 lbs (Dylan McIlrath) to 160 lbs (Maxim Golod).
