Nick Jensen picked a good time to score his second goal of the season, the only problem was that it took another three minutes before the crowd at Van Andel Arena knew he had scored. The speedy blueliner rushed into the Monsters zone in overtime and fired a shot that appeared to glance off the twine near the post and continue on into the corner. Play continued until the end of the extra session and as the team prepared for the shootout they examined the net and found a rip in the twine. After a lengthy review the Referee awarded the goal and the win to Grand Rapids. Jared Coreau was stellar in the win, posting his league leading 19th victory.

The first period was exactly what you would expect from a contest with the Lake Erie Monsters, lots of back and forth play with very few real exciting scoring chances. It was a defensive grind trying to find holes through the neutral zone with the usual clutching, grabbing and hitting. Jared Coreau made a couple of major league stops later in the period including one where he stopped the initial shot and three separate rebound shots from different shooters to preserve the scoreless tie. Ryan Sproul and Brett Gallant were jousting with each other in front of the net, but were broken up before the gloves came off. Andy Miele had the best chance of the 1st when he got behind the defense and flew up the wing, cut towards the net and fired a shot on Thiessen. Mantha snuck in late and arrived at the net just as the shot came through and redirected it just wide. Shots on goal: GR 12 - LE 10.

Coreau got run into and bowled over in the crease, with no penalty called. Two-on-one Bertuzzi and Miele, nice shot and then Russo coming late just missed the rebound. Nastasiuk one-on-one made a nice move to push the puck through the defenseman's legs and could get by him to whack it home. A Lake Erie player went down in front of the boxes after a check, but play continued as Nastasiuk had another great chance but was knocked down from behind with no call. Behind the play Yevenko went after Jenks. Give Jenks full credit for hanging in despite a massive size difference (5"), but he took a pounding. Tangradi took off up ice for a chance but was taken down by Moutrey. Shots on goal: GR 14 - LE 10.

Campbell centered for Nosek on a great pass, and Nosek seemed surprised to get it and couldn't get a shot off. Jenks taken down hard along the boards by Heatherington. Mantha with a sick behind the back pass to center the puck, but Tangradi was tied up and couldn't get a shot off. Tangradi and Zengerle 2-on-1 but Zengerle tried to find Frk the trailer but missed him with the pass. Frk big shot close in, but Thiessen made the save. Campbell at the side of the net trying to poke the puck loose and Craig came over and attacked him, touching off a big scrum. Off from the main pack Heatherington had a few free pokes at Nosek before the officials intervened. Frk with a huge hit along the board that knocked the puck loose for Miele at the side of the net. Shots on goal: GR 12 - LE 8.

Aubry heads up play to set up Frk in the slot, but he fanned on it. Great chance by Jensen on the rush, just missing the net and glancing off the twine. Big drive by Sproul and Mantha just missed the rebound. Zengerle fired a shot off that hit Thiessen's shoulder and stayed out. Zengerle had a breakaway, but the buzzer sounded for the end of the period before he took a shot. As the teams prepared for the shootout, the Griffins were very active checking the net and found a hole, prompting the officials to review the Jensen scoring chance. After a long deliberation a goal was awarded to Jensen and the Griffins effectively ending the game just pat the tow minute mark of the extra session. After the game Jensen indicated he was pretty sure that the puck had gone into the net and was not surprised it was a goal. Shots on goal: GR 1 - LE 2. For the Game: GR 39 - Mil 30.

Observations:

Kind of an anti-climatic win after the fact, but the streak stays alive nonetheless!

A couple of transaction notes, Hulking blueliner Richard Nedomlel was dealt to the St Louis Blues earlier in the day, a move that was greeted with some sadness from Griffins fans after his exciting season debut last weekend. This move should be good for Nedomlel as he hopefully will get a chance at the AHL level with St Louis and escapes a very crowded blueline in the Detroit organization.
With Jakub Kindle passing through waivers and being assigned to Grand Rapids, the Griffins also returned Scott Czarnowczan to Toledo (ECHL). He played very well last weekend and as at least a solid AHL'er. He probably would be a regular with most other organizations.
