Organizational Comments: Red Wings Asst GM Jim Nill: He's got good enough skill that he can play anywhere, But if something happens, you know they're there to back you up and they're going to be in the other team's face all the time.
What GRC says: 2015-16 You have to give full marks to the rugged winger for battling back from yet another significant injury to continue to be a factor for the Griffins. He missed the 20 goal mark by one and never stopped battling in whatever role he was thrust into. The simple truth though was that three seasons of injuries finally caught up with, limiting his effectiveness down the stretch and into the postseason. Callahan will benefit from a healthy off season to rest and rebuild and should come back stronger next season. He has crossed the threshold and will be a veteran next season, but his leadership and work ethic make him a favorite of the coaching staff, so it would not be surprising to see him return.
2014-15 Had a great start to the season, playing on the top line and putting up points at a career pace. As evidence of how far his game had improved, he was among the top ten in league scoring past the halfway point of the season. A serious knee injury derailed his hot start and left him on the sideline through the end of the post-season. Looking for a new contract, Callahan is likely to return and with a hot start, could benefit from Coach Blashill's promotion to Detroit.
2013-14 Saw his breakout season derailed late, but returned from a gruesome facial injury to show his mettle during the postseason. Callahan managed 11 goals and 23 points in his last 32 games while excelling as a top defensive forward. One of the team's best penalty killers, Mitch demonstrated his value as a well-rounded player capable of excelling on any line and earned the trust of coach Blashill. A restricted free agent, Callahan will be given a chance to battle for a spot with Detroit in training camp, but must clear waivers to be sent back to the Griffins again.
2012-13 Found his scoring touch in the second half, connecting for 9 goals including his first hat trick. He was a big game player in the playoffs, striking for 11 points in 24 games including 2 goals and 5 points in the finals. Callahan has developed into a versatile player who uses his speed and physical play to fore-check and kill penalties with the best of them. He also has shown some good hands, surprising goalies with his shot and can work the cycle in traffic.
2011-12 Callahan showed glimpses of his potential in the second half playing on a rookie energy line with fellow freshmen Aubry and Parkes. When he was on top of his game, he was an aggressive forechecker with soft enough hands to keep the puck deep on the cycle and pot the occasional goal. He struggled to stay at that level for an extended time and seemed to have a problem balancing the physical game with the rest of it. His season ended early with a shoulder injury, but he should come back with more consistency next season.
Fall 2011 A rugged, physical winger with offensive upside, Callahan can also drop the gloves with the best of them. He is an aggressive forechecker in the mold of Dallas Drake, but his other gifts put him in line with a Darren McCarty type of player. In any case his first year in pro hockey should be an exciting one to watch.
Role: Physical Winger
Projection: NHL 3rd Line wing
