D.O.B.: 10/31/96
From: Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, RUS
Height: 6'2
Weight: 205
Shoots: Left
Drafted: 2015 draft 1st rnd, 19th overall by Detroit (NHL)
Acquired: Signed to 3-yr contract by Detroit (NHL) 10/2/15
Personal:
Plus: Elite level on-ice awareness and puck sense... Powerful, accurate shot his greatest weapon... Brings Physical element to game to go along with his size...
Minus: Foot speed could use a boost... Defensive game still in progress...
Organizational Comments: Red Wings Director of Player Development - Jiri Fischer "He has high-end skill, high-end puck possession. He knows where his linemates are even though he's never played with them before. He can withstand the pressure of the opposition, keep the puck in and still try to make a play."
What GRC says: 2018-19 Svechnikov missed the entire 2018-2019 season after injuring himself during the pre-season and undergoing reconstructive knee surgery. The gifted sniper is attempting to regain his place in the prospect pecking order after a pair of tough luck seasons.
1017-18 The gifted Russian sniper suffered through an abysmal first half and showed some signs of righting the ship around the halfway point. After a decent stretch he was recalled to Detroit for 14 games, scoring his first 2 NHL goals. Upon returning to the Griffins he promptly went into the tank again and struggled into the postseason. Next season will be a make or break season for Svechnikov, who must find a way to stop putting so much pressure on him and learn to just play his game. He remains an impressive package of skill, size, speed and snarl, hopefully he shakes the sophomore slump and gets a mulligan on last season.
2016-17 Impressive rookie continued to improve as season went on scoring at a point per game pace and finishing a 20-goal season. Svechnikov became much more assertive in the second half and used his size and speed to create chances more effectively. Great package of size, speed and skill fought through a scoring slump as he adjusted to the level of play in the playoffs, but was not a liability when not scoring. He looks to be close to regular employment at the NHL level.
Summer 2016 Svechnikov is a gifted sniper with a nose for the net and a hard accurate shot that he can get off quickly. His on-ice awareness and thought process is elite level already and he will only get better. He also likes to make a big hit and is a power forward, fitting into a 6'2 inch frame giving him the size to back it up. He can be a game changer and should have ample opportunity to grow into the pro game this season.
Role: Scoring Winger
Projection: Middle six winger
