What GRC says:
2017-18 The Griffins defensive powerhouse enjoyed another solid season equaling or exceeding his previous career high offensive totals. Offense however is the least important part of his game, however, as his true value lies in his work on the forecheck and penalty kill. He plays a hard physical game that wears down opponents and gets them looking over their shoulders, but possesses soft hands, quick feet and good enough instincts to take advantage of the turnovers his hits and poke checks create. He is among the top penalty killers in the AHL, and the team looked much different when he was suspended during the postseason. He finished off the season in style with a hat trick in the final game. Coming in to the second year of his contract, the Griffins should expect more of the same.
2016-17 An unsung hero on this team, Campbell uses his strength and speed to provide energy, playing a hitting, fore-checking game that makes him very hard to play against. He is a rock solid defensive forward who has shown glimpses of having the offensive touch to capitalize on the turnovers he frequently forces. A punishing, but clean hitter, Colin is an effective agitator often drawing penalties as opponents try to get a piece of him after the whistle. An AHL UFA, it remains to be seen whether he will return to the Griffins, but his departure would be a huge loss.
2015-16 Campbell continued to build off his successful first half, providing a solid presence on the third and fourth lines as well as seizing a role as a primary penalty killer. He showed off a knack for scoring clutch goals, showing off some pretty soft hands in close. He also is difficult to play against but rarely takes a bad penalty and uses his size and frame effectively. Despite scoring a career high 10 goals, his ability to score enough to play at the next level appears to be his biggest question mark. Another year of continued development should be expected for the restricted free agent, as he is a lock to be re-signed for next season.
2014-15 A disappointing season for Campbell who was unable to establish himself as a regular. He did not provide much offense, and had marginal results as a grinder and defensive presence. At times he seemed to do a good job of being an agitator, but consistency was elusive. With another year on his entry level contract he needs to stake out his spot in the lineup.
Spring 2014 Campbell brings a lot of the same skills as former Griffin Luke Glendening. He is physically mature and can create havoc with his strength. Not a flashy player, he gets by with grit and determination and scores his goals from right in front of the paint. He should get a nice opportunity to adjust to the pro-game with Grand Rapids' patchwork lineup and is another piece for Coach Blashill to polish into a player.
